Seasonal Vegetables & Fruits: June (South Africa)

June 1, 2017

June is our official start of winter here in South Africa so I find my style of cooking changes and we eat more stews and curries – nice hearty meals to warm things up.  Mind you, not that it gets too cold here in Durban compared to other areas in South Africa but it’s the only chance we’ve got.

In season on shelves this month are the following – remember to try buy locally as much as possible to reduce your carbon footprint and also to ensure you’re getting the freshest produce.  If you have any local suppliers you would like me to mention in an up coming blog post – please leave me a comment or drop me an email from my “contact me” page.  Thanks in advance!

Vegetables: Radish, peas, spinach, chillies, cabbage, cucumber, turnips, leeks, onions, Jerusalem artichokes, broccoli, cauliflower, beetroot, parsnips and carrots.

Starchy Veg: Sweet potatoes, potatoes, butternut and pumpkin.

Fruits: Grapefruit, naartjies, oranges, lemons, limes, bananas, lemons, pineapples, apples, granadillas, avocados

Recipes that use some of these ingredients include – my naartjie, ginger chicken dish (the featured recipe for this post) and also this delicious cauliflower pizza.  Enjoy!
